    OUR STORY

Gabe & Christine began their trail careers in 1996, spending 13 years
working on and leading professional trail crews for the NPS and USFS in
Montana and Alaska before striking out on their own in 2008.
2021 will be their 26th season in the field together.

Interior Trails was founded with the intention of bringing the best of our field-based trail crew experience to the private sector. That means we think it's as important to know how to sharpen hand tools and improvise with on-site materials as it is to put in a competetive bid or write a thorough SWPPP plan .

We are passionate about trails, tools, trail crews, and the long legacy of
wildland laborers, jacks-of-all-trades and traildogs that we are part of.
OUR FAMILY

Christine Byl brings energy and determination to any project, and is the field calculator who's always thinking ahead to the next step. She keeps the big picture in mind, works easily with all kinds of people, and always has a string cheese on hand. In addition to being a traildog, she's also a writer and a teacher. Check out her book about trail crews--Dirt Work: An Education in the Woods--at her website, christinebyl.com.

Gabe Travis balances the long view with a focused attention to detail. His training as an artist (www.gabetravis.com) is a great complement to trail design work; he readily sees aesthetic solutions on the ground. His easy-going confidence brings out the best in any group and makes him a natural educator. Gabe has developed his own personal trail-mix so good it should be patented.

Gabe & Christine live on Dene lands, in the Wolf Townships, near Healy, Alaska in a yurt surrounded by Denali National Park. We love land and building projects,  food gathering and preservation, and adventures in wild places.
